I never had a love for books. Throughout my childhood, I would rather touch my Playstation than to dread reading a long dull novel. I think the only books I ever read in my childhood was Captain Underpants (who remember this!?) and Harry Potter. Ha!
Now, I choose books that I hope can teach me things. Teach me how to succeed. Teach me how to be a good person. How the world works. How to learn. How to live. How to find happiness.
It’s hard to get back into reading if you haven’t picked up a book in years, let alone knowing where to start. No matter what your reason is for getting back into reading, here are a list of books to get you started.
Meditations by Marcus Aurelius
I stumbled upon this book and Stoic philosophy through Ryan Holiday and Tim Ferriss. This book is one of those books that has had a significant impact on the way I act and view life. We are able to witness and absorb private thoughts from one of the world’s greatest conquerors. He shows us how we are in control of
the way we perceive events, the importance of having a higher purpose, how ego is the enemy, the trait of humility, personal ethics, the strength to endure, and the determination of self-actualisation.
4 Hour Work Week by Timothy Ferriss
If you have ever felt trapped in a repetitive life cycle, with your 9-5 job looming down over you and told yourself that you need to escape this, then this book is for you. This book helps breath insight on how you can escape the 9-5 work life by providing the tools and know-how in getting there. This book will redefine the way you look at life, how we don’t have to follow the deferred plan of going to school to get grades, only to work till we’re 65 so we can retire. The boundaries in life are limitless, but only if you take action.
The One Thing by Gary Keller
“What is the ONE thing you can do, such by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary”. This book will make you always conscious of your present action and make you question whether you are being productive or not – well it did for me ha! The ONE Thing is powerful for its ability to stop you running all over the place like a headless chicken. I am a big campaigner who starts a lot of things but never finishes. The ONE Thing will make you finish your current task before moving on to the next. You will also become aware of your sense of purpose as Keller makes you define your purpose first before tackling the small tasks.
On the Shortness of life by Seneca
People often complain how there’s not enough time in the day or how life is so short. If this is true then why are we seeing people like Elon Musk starting three multi-billionaire dollar companies at the same time? Okay, Musk is a freak of nature… The point is everyone has the same amount of time in a day and are able to accomplish the same amount of results. Seneca reminds us to stop sitting and watching life go idly by, life will not wait for us to pursue our desires. The time is now to do what you want, but only if you take action. Seneca says “It is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste a lot of it. Life is long enough, and a sufficiently generous amount has been given to us… Life is long if you know how to use it”
Man’s search for meaning by Viktor Frankl
If you were imprisoned in a concentration camp, and you were at your very lowest, you would surely ask “what is the meaning of life?”. When I think of this question, I would overthink and overcomplicate things. However, Frankl saw the glimpses of the answer through his inmate’s actions. Our purpose of living is because of our dedication to a cause. When we have a meaning, we can bear any situation.
The Way of the superior man by David Deida
The ideology traits of an “alpha male” in your typical man in today’s times are rarely to be found. As time moves forward, further and further away from cavemen times, we men are growing softer and softer. Deida breathes wisdom and practical actions in becoming a superior man, mastering the challenges of women, work, sexual desires and the world. Lead by example, and your women and peers will become attracted to your new masculinity. I found this book to be very impactful, especially to a young male trying to leave his mark in the world.
Start with these recommendations and soon you will fall into an addiction. The addiction of growth as an individual.
